STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Lauren St. Clair and her Stanford
teammates were embarrassed by St. Joseph's last year. She wasn't
going to let it happen again.
St. Clair, a Philadelphia native, scored seven points, including
the go-ahead 3-pointer, in the final 39 seconds to lead Stanford (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP) to a 79-72 overtime victory over St. Joseph's on Friday
night, giving coach Tara VanDerveer her 499th career victory.
Last year, the Hawks gave Stanford its largest defeat, 69-41, of
the season. It was also the fewest points the Cardinal had scored
in a loss in 15 years.
"Last year was my homecoming and they spoiled it for me," said
St. Clair, who was held to five points in that contest. "I wanted
this game more than anything. Any time you lose to a team, you want
to get it back."
Bethany Donaphin led Stanford (2-1) with 23 points and Susan
King added 13.
"Everybody came through in overtime," said Donaphin. "We
stayed with our game very well."
Susan Moran scored a career-high 30 points for St. Joseph's
(1-1) and now has 1,007 points in her career. The junior forward is
third-fastest player in school history to reach the 1,000-point
mark.
"Sue has a great knack for getting to the basket," said Hawks'
coach Stephanie Gaitley. "She's difficult to guard and she wants
the ball. Not only does she score and rebound, she does other
intangible things in terms of leadership."
Moran led St. Joseph's in both scoring and rebounding in her
first two seasons.
Amra Mehmedic and Angela Zampella each added 13 points and Irina
Krasnoshiok had 12.
After the Cardinal scored the first basket of the second half,
St. Joseph's went on a 16-2 run, capped by Mehmedic's jumper, to
take a 42-40 lead six minutes into the half.
Stanford regained the lead at 44-42 a minute later on King's
breakaway layup.
King's 3-pointer gave the Cardinal a 63-56 edge with 3:42 left,
but the Hawks scored the next seven points to tie it.
King gave Stanford the lead with 39 seconds left before Moran
responded with the tying basket 15 seconds later.
"They went to Moran and she delivered for them," said
VanDerveer. "She's tough to guard."
King missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer, sending the game
into overtime.
"We took a ranked team on their home court right to the end,"
said Gaitley. "This is one of the most difficult games we'll
play."
St. Joseph's had a 72-70 lead with 1:35 remaining in overtime,
but the Cardinal scored the game's final nine points. St. Clair's
3-pointer at 0:39 put Stanford up for good.
"Lauren is a clutch shooter for us," said VanDerveer. "We got
her open and she knocked it down."
Stanford scored the game's first 11 points and held the Hawks to
a single field goal in the first seven minutes en route to a 36-26
halftime lead.
Donaphin made six of her seven shots in the first half for the
Cardinal to score 13 of her points.
