BOX SCORE
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- The freshman class for Duke lived up
to its billing as one of the nation's best on Saturday, scoring
more points than the entire William & Mary roster in an 81-46
victory.
Led by Rometra Craig's 19 and Alana Beard's 14, the first-year
Blue Devils scored 48 points.
"I'm impressed with their versatility, their depth, their
athleticism," said William & Mary coach Debbie Taylor. "Their
freshman additions will just make them a more phenomenal team this
year."
Senior Missy West scored 13 for 3-0 Duke (No. 4 ESPN/USA Today, No. 3 AP), which played without
veteran Krista Gingrich (torn leg muscle), and lost Georgia
Schweitzer in the first half with a possible separated shoulder.
"The great thing about this team is our depth," said coach
Gail Goestenkors. "We feel we can go very, very deep on our bench.
We feel comfortable even if we are missing one or two regular
starters in the game."
Schweitzer left with five points and was still visibly in pain
after the game. She was to be examined by team doctors Sunday.
Craig hit three 3-pointers during a 28-5 run that propelled Duke
to a 41-24 halftime lead.
"I was just thinking that I could hit the open shot," Craig
said. "The team was doing a great job of moving the ball around
and I was just the one that got open."
William & Mary never got closer than 15 points in the second
half.
Kelly Ercole scored 12 points to lead William & Mary, which
committed 32 turnovers, went 18-for-52 from the floor, and hit only
one of seven free throws.
Duke also had 43-32 rebounding margin, with Rochelle Parent and
Olga Gvozdednovic getting six boards each.
The Tribe hit nine of 17 3-pointers, ending up with a better
percentage from outside the arc (52.9) than inside (34.6).
Duke shot 31 of 62 from the field and hit 10 of 23 3-pointers.
"They can maintain intensity, against a good opponent or
not-so-good, for all 40 minutes," Taylor said. "That's what makes
them so good."
