LB Joe Mathis, Washington's leader in sacks, sits out win with injury

SEATTLE -- Washington outside linebacker Joe Mathis, who leads the Huskies' highly ranked defense in sacks, sat out the team's 41-17 victory over Oregon State on Saturday due to an undisclosed injury. His status for next weekend's game at Utah is in question.

While coach Chris Petersen wouldn't disclose the nature of Mathis' injury, Petersen did say it wasn't season ending.

"We expect to get him back -- we'll see," Petersen said. "I don't know when, but soon."

Mathis' injury was reported in advance of the game by the Seattle Times, which also noted Mathis was seen on campus in a walking boot this past week. The Huskies were off last week, so it appears the injury occurred during practices.

Mathis, a 6-foot-2, 255-pound senior, leads the Huskies with five sacks and is tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 7.5.

Mathis was replaced in the starting lineup by junior Connor O'Brien, who finished with four tackles and the Huskies' only sack of the day.

Washington starting defensive tackle Elijah Qualls didn't play in the first quarter against the Beavers, but he entered the game thereafter. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski said Qualls didn't start because of a discipline issue.
