Tar Heels guard Caleb Peterson out for season with back injury

North Carolina will be without starting left guard Caleb Peterson for the remainder of the season, the school announced Thursday.

Peterson, a four-year starter for the Tar Heels, will undergo surgery Friday to repair a back injury.

Peterson's loss is the latest among a growing list of significant injuries for No. 22 North Carolina, which lost starting receiver Mack Hollins to a season-ending injury earlier this week and also announced backup middle linebacker Jonathan Smith underwent foot surgery that will end his season this week.

Peterson is set to have surgery performed by Dr. Andrew Dossett in Dallas this week. He had started 30 consecutive games before missing the past two with the back injury. He is the second offensive lineman lost for the season for UNC, joining guard John Ferranto.

North Carolina travels to Virginia this week.
