SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A not guilty plea has been entered on behalf of a Notre Dame cornerback accused of tackling a police officer and punching him during an altercation outside a bar.

St. Joseph Superior Court Magistrate Elizabeth Hardtke entered the preliminary plea Wednesday for Devin Butler on felony counts of resisting law enforcement and battery against a public safety official.

Butler wore a white shirt and black tie during the court appearance. He declined to comment afterward. He is scheduled for an initial hearing on Sept. 1.

Butler was arrested Saturday hours after Indiana State Police arrested five teammates about 40 miles south of South Bend on misdemeanor marijuana and gun charges in a separate incident.

Coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that Butler had been suspended indefinitely from the team. Butler already was out until October with a broken foot.

Notre Dame vice president of communications Paul Browne told ESPN's Jeannine Edwards that Butler's status with the university has not changed. Butler is still enrolled, and at this time the school will have no further comment.

In a prior statement Browne had said any student charged with a felony was subject to dismissal.
