TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama basketball coach Mark Gottfried,
rumored as a possible candidate for several vacancies, has agreed
to a contract extension with the Crimson Tide.
Athletic director Mal Moore said Tuesday that details of the
agreement would not be released until it is approved by the Board
of Trustees and President Andrew Sorenson.
"I would like to say how proud I am for the University of
Alabama and for the athletic department that Mark will remain in
this position," Moore said.
Alabama was 25-11 last season, its best record since 1992. The
Tide finished second in the National Invitation Tournament.
In three seasons as Alabama's head coach, Gottfried has a 55-42
record. Gottfried played for Alabama from 1985-87. He later was an
assistant coach at UCLA and head coach at Murray State.
Gottfried just completed the third year of a five-year contract
that paid him $375,000 a year.
With all five starters expected back next season,
Gottfried said he expects a bright future at Alabama.
"I'm excited about our future and I'm appreciative of the
University of Alabama for allowing me to be its basketball coach,"
Gottfried said. "And I'm also appreciative of the interest and
growing support of our program from our fans."
Gottfried has been mentioned as a possible candidate for several
coaching vacancies, including the South Carolina job. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories
