Arizona no longer is unbeaten, which made Duke practically unanimous.
The Blue Devils received all but one first-place vote and
tightened their grip on the top spot in the ESPN/USA Today
college basketball coaches' poll released Sunday night.
Last week, Duke received 16 first-place votes and Arizona got
the other 15. But Arizona's 72-69 loss to unranked Purdue on
Saturday dumped the Wildcats (3-1) from second to fifth.
Duke (5-0) won a pair of games to take the Preseason NIT and
crushed Army. It received 30 first-place votes and 774 points
from a panel of Division I coaches.
Michigan State (3-0) climbed one spot to second with 701 points.
Stanford (4-0), which won three games in the Puerto Rico
Shootout, jumped from fifth to third, receiving the remaining
first-place vote and 691 points.
Kansas (5-0) held fourth ahead of Arizona. North Carolina
(3-0), Tennessee (3-0), Illinois (4-1), Seton Hall (2-0) and
Florida (1-0) complete the top 10.
There was plenty of shuffling in the second 10. Notre Dame is
11th and is followed by Wake Forest (4-0) as both schools jumped
four rungs. Oklahoma (4-0) climbed from 19th to 13th and
Maryland (1-2), which lost twice in Maui, dropped from
sixth to 14th.
Temple (15), which lost to Duke by two points in the final of
the Preseason NIT, moved up 10 spots to 15th. Connecticut
(3-1), Cincinnati (2-1), Southern California (3-0), Syracuse
(4-0) and Utah (3-1) complete the top 20.
Connecticut and Cincinnati fell four spots each and USC moved up
five spots. Syracuse was not ranked last week and Utah fell from
14th.
St. John's (3-1) moved from 24th to 21st and is followed by new
entry Virginia (3-0), Wisconsin (1-1), Arkansas (3-1) and DePaul
(3-1).
Perennial powers UCLA (2-2) and Kentucky (1-3) dropped out of
the rankings.
