BOX SCORE
STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- Caron Butler had a career night. He wasn't
happy.
Jim Calhoun's Connecticut team just recorded its third
double-digit win. He definitely wasn't happy.
| | Edmund Saunders, left, scored a career-high 20 points and had 13 rebounds for the Huskies. |
The Huskies (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, AP) beat Brown 88-78 Tuesday night, and according
to Calhoun, the final score was the only positive as UConn gave up
52 points in the second half.
"We apparently have no way to defend that," he said. "They
clearly outplayed us in the second half. When you get guys posted
up by 5-foot-10 kids, you've got trouble."
Butler had 21 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and five assists
in only his second game for the Huskies (4-1). The freshman swingman, one
of the nation's top recruits, was suspended for UConn's first three
games for an NCAA violation.
He was disappointed at the overall effort, as well.
"We didn't play defense," Butler said. "None in the second
half, and some in the first half. Brown just completely outworked
us.
"We've got to show some pride. It's a pleasure to wear this
uniform and we've got to represent this school right."
The Huskies held Brown (1-3) to 30-percent shooting in the first half
and led 46-26 at the break. UConn led by as much as 22 points early
in the second half, but Brown cut the lead to 10 three times.
Brown's Earl Hunt had 20 of his 26 points in the second half.
"Anytime you are playing as an underdog against a highly touted
opponent, you want to come out and compete," Hunt said. "You
can't look at them in awe. I think we just turned it around and
came together as a team."
The Bears shot 63 percent in the second half and burned the
Huskies with several backdoor plays.
"Once we started to sprint through our offense, it gave us a
lot of good post up opportunities with our guards," said Brown
coach Glen Miller. "And that's something the offense will give you
if you run it right,"
The Huskies did most of the damage inside, getting 46 points in
the paint and 26 points off second chances. Edmund Saunders had 13
boards to help UConn to a 49-24 rebounding edge.
Saunders had a career-high 20 points and Albert Mouring finished
with 18 for UConn. Mouring also led the team with three blocks.
Alaivaa Nuualiitia had 11 points and seven rebounds for Brown.
The game was a homecoming of sorts for second-year Brown coach
Miller, a former UConn assistant under Calhoun. Miller also played
under Calhoun at Northeastern.
"I wasn't surprised how well Glen's team played. I was
surprised how poorly we played," Calhoun said. "The worst part of
it was we thought we were trying."
