EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Ninth-ranked Seton Hall
looks to open with three straight wins for the third time in
four seasons tonight as it hosts instrastate rival St. Peter's. After routing Rider in the season opener, Seton Hall (2-0) needed some late heroics from a pair of freshmen to post a 79-78 victory at Clemson on Tuesday. Andre Barrett hit a foul shot with 5.8 seconds remaining to give the Pirates the lead before Eddie Griffin blocked the game's final shot to seal the victory. The victory was coach Tommy Amaker's first against an Atlantic Coast Conference team. Amaker has guided the Pirates to postseason tournaments in his first three years at Seton Hall, including an NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16" appearance last season. Darius Lane scored 29 points, including seven 3-pointers, for Seton Hall on Tuesday and is pacing the team with a 27.0 scoring average. Griffin is starting his collegiate career in fine fashion, averaging 22 points and 13.5 rebounds. St. Peter's (1-2) posted its first victory of the season following two losses, a 76-71 triumph over Lafayette on Saturday. Keith Sellers led the way with 20 points while Rodney Rodgers recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Peacocks opened the season with losses to Boston University and Boston College. St. Peter's has some ruggedness up front with Kamaal McQueen, Rodgers and Sellers but was stung by the loss of the school's all-time leading scorer, Ricky Bellinger. Seton Hall has won four straight against St. Peter's and 13 of the last 14 meetings. The Pirates hold a 48-23 advantage in the all-time series that dates to 1932.
