BOX SCORE
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Joe Shipp hit consecutive 3-pointers late in overtime and California beat Mississippi State 83-76 Monday night in the first round of the Preseason NIT. California advanced to play Texas, which beat Navy 79-65, in the second round Wednesday night. In winning its season opener for the 11th time in 12 years, Cal overcame 26 points and 8 3-pointers by Mississippi State's Antonio Jackson, who threatened to shoot the Bulldogs into the second round all by himself. After narrowly missing a victory in regulation, the Bears ran away by allowing the Bulldogs just one field goal in overtime. The Bears were inches away from a regulation victory. After Mario Austin missed an 8-foot jumper and Cal called a timeout with one second left, Shantay Legans threw a full-court pass that ricocheted off two Bulldogs' hands and went to Sean Lampley but his 15-foot jumper went in and out. In overtime, Lampley, who led Cal with 19 points, hit a jumper and a free throw, and Shipp's long 3-pointer put Cal up by four with 1:29 left. In a game that began at 9 p.m. PT to accommodate national television, the teams combined to shoot 49 3-pointers. Mississippi State outrebounded the Bears 46-30 and got 13 points and 13 rebounds from Robert Jackson, while Austin had 16 points. Solomon Hughes had 14 points for Cal, and Shipp added 13. Shipp and Brian Wethers each hit three 3-pointers. Regulation featured eight lead changes over the final 10 minutes. Tang Hamilton beat the shot clock and put Mississippi State ahead 72-70 when he slipped into the middle of the lane and slammed down a two-handed dunk with 40 seconds to play. Cal replied with a short bank shot by Hughes with 14 seconds left. The Bulldogs missed 11 of their first 12 shots as Cal jumped to an early lead, but Mississippi State came back behind Jackson's red-hot shooting. Lampley, the leading scorer and rebounder on the Bears' 18-15 team last season, got into early foul trouble while facing more of the tough inside defense that often proved to be Cal's undoing last season. | ALSO SEE Mens College Basketball Scoreboard
