INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana made its first trip to the Conseco Fieldhouse a memorable one. The Hoosiers defeated Canisius 95-53 in the first round of the 18th annual Hoosier Classic on Monday night. "From the standpoint of the way the game went, what we would like to do, I feel pretty good about those things," Indiana coach Bob Knight said. Kirk Haston led the No. 12 Hoosiers with 20 points. Three other Hoosiers finished in double figures as Indiana (9-1) improved to 35-0 in the Classic, winning by an average of more than 25 points per contest. Michael Lewis scored 15 points, and Lynn Washington and Kyle Hornsby finished with 14 and 12 respectively. Dorian McClure led Canisius (2-8) with 13. The Hoosiers, who played the previous 17 Classics at Market Square Arena, face the winner of the Holy Cross/Alabama-Birmingham game Tuesday. "There's a reason (Indiana's) 12th in the country and there's a reason we are 2-8 and you saw a little bit of both tonight," Canisius coach Mike McDonald said. "Indiana is very good and they gave us fits offensively." Indiana took an early 8-0 lead behind two baskets each by Haston and A.J. Guyton. Lewis and Hornsby helped extend the Hoosiers' lead in the first half. Lewis made two 3-pointers and later received a large ovation when he dove over the scorer's table while chasing down a loose ball. Indiana extended its lead to 28-15 with 9:38 remaining in the half when Lewis threw a cross-court pass to Hornsby, who finished with a layup. Hornsby topped his career high in points by scoring 10 in the first half, one of three Hoosiers to score in double-digits during the first 20 minutes. Hornsby played a career-high 22 minutes. "With Fife being sick, we said we would play Hornsby more," Knight said. Fife missed the contest with the flu. Indiana shot 54 percent from the floor and held the Golden Griffins to 30 percent from the field. Indiana forced 20 turnovers. "We gave up 25 points in the second half," Knight said. "So our defense didn't deteriorate. That was a positive thing from our standpoint." Indiana's lead grew to 22 following a 10-0 run at the end of the first half. Lynn Washington ended the run with two free throws to give the Hoosiers a 44-22 lead. "They really are sound defensively," McDonald said. "They do a great job of pressuring the ball." Indiana led by as many as 24 points in the half and took a 52-28 lead into the break.
