Cavs' Derrick Rose to wear boot, undergo extended treatment for two to three weeks

NBA, Cleveland Cavaliers

CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers starting point guard Derrick Rose will miss at least the next two weeks with a sprained left ankle.

The Cavaliers say Rose had additional tests Friday at the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Center. Rose's ankle will be immobilized in a boot for the next week, and he will undergo "an extended treatment process over the next two to three weeks."

"Just a jacked-up ankle," Rose told ESPN. "I'm just trying to figure it out, bro. Right now, it's just a jacked-up ankle. Just sore. I'm getting a lot of treatment for it, and tonight will be my first time wearing a boot. So I'll wear this, for I don't know how long, to see how it helps."

Rose injured the ankle Oct. 20 at Milwaukee and missed four games, then returned, before missing Cleveland's past four games.

He says he has been icing his ankle at least three to four times a day to contend with the swelling.

"Morning, at practice, on the plane, right when we get to the city," Rose said. "The swelling went down a little bit, but it's still painful. So I just got to take my time."

When Rose initially missed four games with the ankle injury, he was still able to work on his conditioning, preserving the strides he made in the offseason to come into camp in shape. This time around, that physical activity has been halted to avoid pounding on the ankle.

"That's gone," Rose said of his conditioning. "Yeah, that's gone. You can't do anything for a while. You just got to wait and see what it is and just go from there. I know the wind thing is probably out the window."

The tests the Cavs have administered have given Rose the peace of mind to know there is no major structural damage in the ankle, but the diagnosis does wear at his patience.

"It's just a sprained ankle," he said. "Just a bum ankle. Man, it's frustrating. I just got to take my time. Hopefully this boot will take some pressure off it and I'm able to heal. Right now, I'm just trying to keep my spirits up."

The 29-year-old Rose is averaging 14.3 points in seven games this season. The former league MVP signed with the Cavs as a free agent this summer after spending last season with the New York Knicks.

Because of Rose's injury and Isaiah Thomas still being sidelined by a hip problem, Cavs coach Tyronn Lue has been forced to juggle his lineups and has used LeBron James at point guard.

Iman Shumpert started at point guard during Cleveland's recent road trips as the Cavs went 3-1.

Shumpert started again Friday night in the Cavaliers' 118-113 overtime win against the LA Clippers.
