AP source: Pelicans add Nelson with Rondo out

NEW ORLEANS -- A person familiar with the deal says guard Jameer Nelson has agreed to one-year, veteran minimum, free-agent contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The person informed The Associated Press of the move on condition of anonymity Saturday because the transaction has not been announced. The person says the Pelicans also have decided to waive guard Jordan Crawford to create room on the roster for Nelson, who became a free agent this past week when he was released by Denver.

The agreement with Nelson, who could make his Pelicans debut Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers, was first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

Nelson could start at point guard for New Orleans while Rajon Rondo spends a month or more recovering from recent core muscle surgery.

Nelson averaged 9.2 points and 5.1 assists in 75 games with Denver last season.

He has career averages of 11.7 points and 5.2 assists in a 13-year career that has included an initial 10 seasons with Orlando, followed by stops in Dallas, Boston and Denver.
