Cleveland Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson missed Wednesday night's 114-91 win over the Boston Celtics and will sit out Friday's game against the Atanta Hawks while undergoing continued treatment and additional evaluation for a sprained right thumb, the team announced.
Thompson suffered the sprain during Tuesday night's victory over the Orlando Magic, MRI results revealed on Wednesday.
"He's hurt. He's out tonight and he's out Friday. That's all I know,'' Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said before Wednesday's game.
The Cavs started Channing Frye in Thompson's place against Boston.
"He got it bent back going from a rebound I think it was,'' Lue said of how Thompson's injury occurred.
Thompson hadn't missed a game since Feb. 10, 2012. His streak of 447 consecutive games played was the longest in the league and longest streak in Cavaliers history.
He is averaging 8.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season.
"It's unfortunate. But we've been in this position all year long,'' Lue said. "Guys gotta step up and be ready to play and we know that. And guys understand that. So we just gotta come together until we get Tristan back.''
Earlier Wednesday, the Cavs called up center Larry Sanders from the D-League. He played four minutes with no points and two rebounds.
Sanders was out of the league for two years before the Cavs signed him on March 13, an addition they hope can fill their need for a rim protector.
The Cavs have been plagued by injuries at center this season, having lost Chris Andersen and Andrew Bogut to season-ending injuries.
