Even at 10 years old, it was clear that Michael Phelps was destined for greatness.
In 1995, the most accomplished Olympian of all time set that year's record for the fastest 100-meter butterfly for his age class in the U.S., foreshadowing the legendary success that awaited him.
Although that fact probably won't surprise you, this might: Phelps wasn't the best 10-year-old male swimmer that year.
No, that distinction belonged to Atlanta Hawks big man Kris Humphries, who set six different swimming records for his age class that year (via Hawks.com): 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley.
As if besting Phelps wasn't impressive enough, Humphries also outperformed future Olympians Ryan Lochte and Milorad Cavic, and registered top-10 finishes in all nine race categories. (His 50-meter and 100-meter records stood for over 18 years in the national record books.) To this day, Humphries holds 12 age-bracket records in his home state of Minnesota.
Perhaps he should've stuck with swimming?
