Pelicans' Anthony Davis day-to-day with sprained right big toe

NEW ORLEANS -- Anthony Davis sat out Saturday's 112-110 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves after spraining his right big toe during pregame warm-ups. He is considered day-to-day, the Pelicans said.

"I don't think it's one of those deals where he's gonna be 100 percent," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said postgame. "But, more than likely, we'll rest him, and I'm assuming that he'll be able to play in the next couple of days. ... It's one of those deals where I'm not quite sure the extent of it or how it will affect him. But we expect him to come back and play."

The injury prevented an interesting matchup of two former Kentucky stars -- Davis was a first-team All-NBA selection last season, and Minnesota's Karl-Anthony Towns is a leading candidate for rookie of the year.

"Obviously I was disappointed,'' Towns said. "He's one of the best players in the league, and I wanted to go against and absolutely battle and compete against him."

This marked Davis' seventh missed game this season. He injured his left knee while trying to block and avoid Russell Westbrook in Thursday's win over the Oklahoma City Thunder but did not miss a play and determined himself "fine" afterward.

The All-Star big man is in the midst of one of his best stretches of the season, with a career-high 59 points and 20 rebounds in a win Sunday against the Detroit Pistons.

For the season, Davis is averaging 24.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game with a 25.63 player efficiency rating. His real plus-minus of 3.31 ranks sixth among NBA power forwards.

"It's crazy," said Eric Gordon, who scored 31 points (9-for-17) in 34 minutes in his first game since Jan. 19, 16 games after surgery to repair a broken right ring finger. "AD [and I] do different things. We do both score, but he's a dominant force, and you definitely need that toward the end of the game. We beat ourselves, but it's tough to lose AD, for sure."

Ryan Anderson started for Davis at power forward, making this the 27th starting lineup the Pelicans have used this season. He contributed a double-double of 31 points and 14 rebounds.

The injury-plagued Pelicans have already lost Tyreke Evans (right knee surgery), Quincy Pondexter (left knee surgery) and Bryce Dejean-Jones (right wrist surgery) for the season, and Omer Asik is expected to miss two weeks after spraining his right ankle Sunday in Detroit.
