Jason Kipnis to begin rehab assignment Sunday

MLB, Cleveland Indians

Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis will begin a rehab assignment Sunday at Double-A Akron as he works his way back from a strained right rotator cuff.

The two-time All-Star will serve as the designated hitter on Sunday and play second base Monday.

Kipnis is coming off a strong 2016 season. He batted .275 with 23 homers and 82 RBIs in a career-high 156 games. He batted .290 in the World Series and homered twice as the Indians lost in seven games to the Cubs.

Kipnis spent time on the disabled list in 2015 with right shoulder inflammation.
