Cardinals avoid arbitration with Trevor Rosenthal, Kevin Siegrist and Matt Adams

St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have avoided arbitration with relief pitchers Trevor Rosenthal and Kevin Siegrist as well as first baseman Matt Adams, agreeing to one-year deals with the trio.

The club did not disclose the terms of the deals. According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, Rosenthal will earn $6.4 million in 2017, a slight raise from his $5.6 million salary in 2016. Heyman also reports that Adams' contract is worth $2.8 million, up from $1.65 million last season. Terms of Siegrist's deal remain undisclosed.

Rosenthal, 26, began 2016 as the team's closer before being removed from the role midseason amid struggles. He finished the year with a 4.46 ERA, 1.91 WHIP and 14 saves in 45 appearances. The hard-throwing right-hander spent nearly two months on the disabled list with a rotator-cuff injury during the second half of the season.

Siegrist was arbitration-eligible for the first time in his career. Last year, the 27-year-old southpaw led all qualifying National League relievers with a 2.77 ERA in 67 games. He also tallied a team-high 17 holds.

Adams, 28, slashed .249/.309/.471 with 16 homers in a platoon role last season, although shoulder injuries limited him to only 327 plate appearances. The left-handed-hitting first baseman has always been more productive against right-handed pitching, and the same was true in 2016.

The Cardinals' remaining arbitration-eligible players who didn't come to terms with the team were starting pitchers Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha.
