Median ticket price for Game 3 at Wrigley Field is $3,000

MLB, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians

The most costly games in baseball history await Chicago Cubs fans at Wrigley Field this weekend as the World Series returns to the stadium for the first time in 71 years.

The median price of a ticket sold on reseller StubHub for Game 3 is $3,000; the median for Game 4 is $3,650 and Game 5 is $3,500.

The median is the middle number in the series of ticket prices arranged in order of value. The StubHub numbers were obtained from insiders who have access to up-to-the-minute buyer and seller data.

The Wrigley figures are at least $2,000 more per ticket than what was sold for Games 1 and 2 in Cleveland, which both had $1,000 medians.

Some tickets have seen falling prices as Friday night's first pitch approaches. When Game 2 ended, the cheapest seat for Game 3 on StubHub was $2,350. As of Friday morning, there are 256 seats listed for less.

The previous high median ticket price happened for games in Boston in 2004, as the Red Sox were on their way to busting the second longest title drought in baseball behind the Cubs. Most tickets for those games hovered around $2,000 each.

Buying a spot on the rooftops overlooking Wrigley Field is a cheaper option, but it's hardly a bargain, with the median price for a rooftop ticket hovering around $1,000 each.

The most expensive ticket purchased on StubHub for any of the three games in Chicago was for a front-row seat by the Cubs bullpen. A fan bought two of them together for $19,000 each. The highest price paid for Game 4 on Saturday night was for two tickets at $18,725 each for second-row seats behind the plate. A seat by the Cleveland Indians bullpen is currently the most costly for Game 5, as a fan paid $17,950 each for four tickets.

The per-game average does not top that of Super Bowl 50, which had a $4,512 average purchase price on StubHub.
