Giants put RHP Jake Peavy (back) on DL, call up RHP Albert Suarez

MLB, San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have placed right-hander Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

The move announced Saturday is retroactive to Aug. 21. San Francisco recalled right-hander Albert Suarez from Triple-A Sacramento to start Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Braves in Peavy's place.

Suarez allowed three runs on five hits in a 3-1 Giants loss. He struck out five and walked two in 4⅓ innings pitched.

"For the first three innings all his pitches were crisp and hitting their spots," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Suarez. "The pitch he'd like back would the one to Kemp. It got away from him. That three-run homer was the difference in the game and our [bullpen] did a great job to hold them there."

Peavy was supposed to start for the first time since a demotion to the bullpen on Aug. 1. The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner began having back pain this week in Los Angeles, and his condition worsened Friday.

Peavy underwent an MRI on Saturday, the results of which weren't immediately known, Bochy said.

Bochy said Peavy "can't pitch the way his back is right now" and that it's "a bad break for him."
