Cardinals put Matt Adams on DL, recall Randal Grichuk

MLB, St. Louis Cardinals

CHICAGO -- The St. Louis Cardinals put first baseman Matt Adams on the 15-day disabled list Thursday due to inflammation in his right shoulder and recalled outfielder Randal Grichuk from Triple-A Memphis.

Adams originally was in Wednesday's lineup vs. the Cincinnati Reds, but alerted the Cardinals that he had woken up with soreness in his shoulder and was scratched.

Adams is batting .249 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs in 95 games. He was doing some of his best work off the bench, where he is batting .385 with two home runs as a pinch-hitter.

Grichuk, 24, was penciled in as the Cardinals' everyday center fielder going into Opening Day after a breakout 2015 season, but struggled in two previous major-league stints this season, batting .216 with a .694 OPS.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said he is hopeful Adams can begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment within the next 10 days and return to the team before rosters expand Sept. 1.

Meanwhile, the club can get more looks at Grichuk to determine if he could be part of their plans moving forward. The team remains intrigued by his power and athleticism. Mozeliak pointed out his poor luck on balls in play (.257 BABIP) and high exit velocity on balls he hits.

"I still feel he's capable of doing big things," Mozeliak said.
