A-ROD ANNOUNCEMENT
The Yankees will hold a news conference with Alex Rodriguez before a game against Cleveland. The Yankees did not detail the purpose of the gathering, but said general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi will be made available following Rodriguez's news conference. The 41-year-old designated hitter has just one start and seven at-bats since July 22 as the Yankees turn toward a youth movement and is stuck at 696 career home runs. Rodriguez has a $20 million salary this year and is owed $20 million in 2017, the final season of his $275 million, 10-year contract.
ANY TAKERS?
Tim Lincecum has been designated for assignment by the Angels, bringing into question the professional future of the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Any team can claim the right-hander, who struggled in his return this season from left hip surgery. If he goes unclaimed, Los Angeles hopes he'll accept an assignment to Triple-A.
DEGROM ON A ROLL
Jacob deGrom (7-5, 2.41) takes a 14-inning scoreless streak into the Mets' matinee against the Tigers. The right-hander has gone seven innings in his past two starts, including in a 7-1 win over the Yankees on Aug. 2. Detroit counters with Anibal Sanchez (6-11, 6.26), who is coming off his first win as a starter since April 28.
BUMGARNER VS NATS
Madison Bumgarner (10-6, 2.25) leads the Giants into the series finale of a three-game set against the Nationals. NL West-leading San Francisco has lost each of Bumgarner's last four starts, including when the left-hander allowed eight runs in a 13-8 defeat at Philadelphia on Aug. 2. NL East-leading Washington sends out Tanner Roark (11-6, 3.02).
DOMINANT DYLAN
Dylan Bundy (4-3, 3.05) tries to extend a dominant stretch when Baltimore faces the White Sox. The hyped rookie has taken no-hitters into the sixth inning in two straight starts and is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four games since moving into the O's rotation. Resurgent James Shields (5-13, 4.92) took a step back in his last start, allowing six runs in an 11-5 loss to Detroit.
STIFLED SOX
Boston's offense tries to rebound against Dodgers right-hander Brandon McCarthy (2-2, 2.76) after a 3-0 loss Saturday. McCarthy has a sparkling ERA in his return from Tommy John surgery but has totaled only seven innings over his last two starts on a limited pitch count. David Price (9-7, 4.30) hasn't won for Boston since July 10.
