Andrew McCutchen leaves with thumb discomfort; 3 HBP

MIAMI -- Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen was among four Pirates players who left Thursday night's 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins due to injuries.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli, third baseman David Freese and shortstop Jordy Mercer all left after getting hit by pitches.

"It was like the ER here," Cervelli said. "It was a crazy day, my friend."

Said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle: "It's a team looking to find some identity on pitching; end up not having good command."

McCutchen lined out in the top of the sixth inning and then was replaced by Sean Rodriguez for the bottom of the inning, leaving to be evaluated by the medical staff for right thumb discomfort.

"It's something I've been dealing with for a while," McCutchen said. "I couldn't take it any longer after my last at-bat. ... It happens to guys, and I am one of the guys it happens to."

Cervelli was hit in the right foot by a pitch in the top of the second inning. He stayed in the game before eventually exiting in the bottom of the third and was replaced by Chris Stewart.

"Everything is negative, just a bruise," Cervelli said.

Freese was hit in the right hand by a pitch in the eighth and stayed in to run before being replaced between innings. Mercer was hit in the left elbow by a pitch in the ninth and scored the tying run before also leaving between innings.

"We'll know more about it [Friday]," Mercer said. "We're going to see our docs and see how it responds in the morning."
