Reds' Alfredo Simon ejected for hitting Chase Anderson with pitch

MLB, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- Cincinnati Reds starter Alfredo Simon was ejected in the fifth inning of Saturday's 7-6 win over Milwaukee after hitting Brewers starter Chase Anderson with a pitch.

Plate umpire James Hoye immediately ejected Simon after he plunked Anderson on the left shoulder leading off the fifth.

An inning earlier, Anderson had hit Simon with a pitch with two outs, a sequence that thwarted Tyler Holt's potential steal of home with the Reds trailing by a run. The Brewers later escaped that jam.

Holt moved to third after doubling home a run earlier in the fourth. Anderson stumbled off the rubber out of his windup, and the ball sailed wide, hitting Simon in the waist. Simon slammed his bat down and glared toward the mound.

In all, the game featured six hit batters.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said there was no intent when Anderson plunked Simon, who initially squared away as if to bunt. Anderson said he rushed his delivery as he saw Holt break.

"It definitely was not on purpose," Anderson said. "I tried to rush, and I slipped, and the ball slipped out of my hand."

When asked if he tried to hit Anderson, Simon declined to comment.

"The umpires said they felt there was an intent, obviously because Alfredo had been hit," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
