Justin Masterson has arthroscopic surgery on right shoulder

MLB, Boston Red Sox

Pitcher Justin Masterson underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday and expects to be back to full strength by spring training, said his agent, Randy Rowley.

Masterson, 30, was released by the Boston Red Sox in August after he posted a 4-2 record and a 5.61 ERA in 18 appearances. He had signed a one-year, $9.5 million contract with the Red Sox as a free agent in December.

He averaged 199 innings per season over a four-year stretch with the Cleveland Indians and was an AL All-Star selection in 2013, but Masterson has been sidetracked by numerous injuries over the past two years and his performance and velocity have slipped noticeably. Masterson threw his fastball at an average of 87.4 mph this season, according to FanGraphs -- down markedly from his career high of 92.7 mph in 2011.

Masterson has a career record of 64-74 with a 4.31 ERA over eight seasons with Cleveland, St. Louis and Boston.
