College Football Traditions
The traditions of the Army-Navy game are about football the way that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade is about helium. When the Corps of Cadets and the Midshipmen march onto the playing field before the game, you witness the discipline that fuels our service academies.
But after the game, when the Army and Navy players stand in front of each student body as they sing their respective alma maters, you understand the heart of both institutions. The Navy players stand with respect behind the Army team as it sings. The Cadets show the same regard for the Midshipmen. It is a symbolic melding, an illustration that once they leave West Point and Annapolis, the two teams have become one. There is no more moving display in college sports.
