Bill O'Brien
Coach | Penn StateHere's all that Bill O'Brien had to do this year at Penn State: Follow an icon in Joe Paterno. Guide a team through maybe the ugliest off-the-field crisis in college sports history. Keep the team together once the NCAA handed down unprecedented penalties in late summer, including a bowl ban and a free transfer policy. Open the season without the team's star running back, leading receiver, potential starting linebacker and place-kicker/punter, all of whom transferred. And did we mention this was O'Brien's first head-coaching gig? Simply keeping Penn State afloat in 2012 would have been an accomplishment. O'Brien bettered that by going 8-4 and winning eight of his last 10 games. In the process, he reunited a community and restored some pride in the Nittany Lions' name. For all of that, he is our national coach of the year. -- Brian Bennett
