They didn't have their own gym, so they practiced at a nearby high school. Their two best players -- Bill Russell and K.C. Jones -- weren't offered scholarships by any other college. And during a time of racial unrest, the San Francisco Dons started three African-American players who some people say helped modernize the game. With Russell swatting shots, San Francisco was a defense-oriented team that took pride in its athleticism and ability to play above the rim. The Dons defeated LaSalle in the 1955 title game and, by the next season, their entertaining style was drawing sellout crowds to gymnasiums across the country.
