Boxing's Heavyweight Championship Lineage
Jack Sharkey
1932-33
Born Joseph Zukauskas, the son of Lithuanian immigrants, Sharkey took his ring name from his two heavyweight idols, Tom Sharkey and Jack Dempsey. He lost his first bid for the heavyweight championship in 1930 when he was disqualified for a low blow against Max Schmeling. But "The Boston Gob" rebounded to win the title in their 1932 rematch by controversial split decision.
Sharkey's title reign, however, would last just one year when, in his first defense, he was knocked out by Primo Carnera, whom Sharkey had defeated years earlier.
