Oct. 12, 2005 -- White Sox 2, Angels 1: Umpire Doug Eddings landed in the middle of a bizarre dispute after Chicago's A.J. Pierzynski apparently struck out swinging to send the game to extra innings. As the Angels walked off the field, Pierzynski alertly sprinted to first base and was ruled safe when Eddings determined that catcher Josh Paul had trapped the ball and was negligent in failing to tag Pierzynski. Moments later, Joe Crede doubled home the winning run, and the Sox went on to take the series in five.
After the game, Eddings' judgment and umpiring "mechanics" were sliced, diced and dissected in every way imaginable. At least Eddings was fortunate to make his controversial call several years before the advent of Twitter.
