In 2008, Stanford updated the Guidelines for Sustainable Buildings to include aggressive energy and water reduction goals. New construction and major renovation projects on campus are expected to use 30% less energy than code allows and consume 25% less potable water than comparable campus buildings these meet LEED Gold equivalency. The Yang and Yamazaki Environment and Energy (Y2E2) Building, Stanford's first large-scale, multiuse high performance building, continues to exceed design expectations and has served as a model for more than a dozen subsequent campus buildings in the new Science and Engineering quad and campus.
