7. Stanford
Stanford is coming off its first top-five finish in 70 years. It doesn't seem like a once-in-a-lifetime season because the Cardinal return a once-in-a-generation quarterback, Andrew Luck. While Luck delivers a more athletic version of Peyton Manning under center, the man who instilled the attitude is gone. Will Stanford still have the ruthless edge that Jim Harbaugh demanded under new coach David Shaw? There are holes to fill on both sides of the line of scrimmage and tough two-way guy Owen Marecic is also gone. Even so, the prospects of continuing to, as Harbaugh put it, "win with character and cruelty" look rosy because Luck is on Stanford's side. -- Rece Davis, ESPN TV
