Bill Snyder's players can rattle off the 16 goals for success that have become the foundation of what has been called the greatest turnaround in college football history. They include terms like commitment, unselfishness, unity and self-discipline, but none are bigger in Snyder's opinion than never giving up. So it's no surprise to see a crystal plaque with an inspirational quote about persistence from Calvin Coolidge front and center on Snyder's desk.
"It's one of those intrinsic values," Snyder said. "That's what life's about. If gets too tough and you want to give in, then you'll probably not live a very happy life. It's so easy to turn away, especially with young people today. The older generation would say this is the day of instant self-gratification. It's not hard to see that's the case. Not for everybody, but enough that it's an issue. 'I want it. I want it now. If I can't have it now, then I'm going to move on.'
"It's so easy to turn and walk away from it. But that's not what we preach and live by here every day. And this is a simple reminder that you can never, ever give up on your dreams. As you get older and older and older, it can come back to haunt you. So that's why you have to remain persistent and never give up."
