Inside Chris Petersen's Office - View 2

A new coach always needs to learn the school's traditions.

Lucky for Petersen, the first line of Washington's fight song is listed right next to his desk, so he could get an early jump on that.

"Bow Down to Washington" is entering its 100th year this month as the school's fight song. The words and music of "Bow Down to Washington" were written by Lester J. Wilson, who graduated from the University of Washington in 1913. The piece was created for a contest to select a fight song that was hosted by the University of Washington Daily, the school's student newspaper.

The only requirement was that the Huskies' rivalry with the Cal Bears be mentioned somewhere in the song, which Wilson did in the second verse: "Bring the Golden Bear from his mighty lair. For we're going to hang his carcass in the Northland." And in the third verse: "And when we snare that Golden Bear, you'll never carry it back to California."

Wilson gets credit for creativity. And as the contest's winner, he also managed to collect a hefty $25.
