Telling The Team
Michael Sam first told a select group of people -- the 2013 Missouri Tigers -- that he is gay. First he confided in a few teammates, then a small group at a team dinner, and then coach Gary Pinkel and the full team.
Months later, Pinkel and tight end Eric Waters suggested that not everyone on the team was comfortable with the news at first. But Missouri's players and coaching staff kept what Sam told them in confidence -- even though he hadn't asked them to keep it a secret.
