2014 NBA Playoffs: Indiana Pacers' path

Vogel Gets Gig
The Pacers are 17-27 under coach Jim O'Brien, who hasn't finished with a winning record in three seasons. Bird is upset two rookies he is very high on, George and Stephenson, aren't playing much. Hibbert seems beaten down by O'Brien's criticism and retreats into his shell.
A former scout and video coordinator, Vogel is just 37 years old and has been O'Brien's lead assistant for just a few months, but has a relationship with the players after serving as the team's development coach, working with most of the roster one-on-one.
When the Pacers fire O'Brien on Jan. 30, Vogel takes over as interim coach. He brings a completely fresh and confident attitude, saying he'll get the team turned around and into the playoffs despite his inexperience. His positive nature rubs off on the team and his lineup changes prove effective.
The Pacers go 20-18 under Vogel, earn the No. 8 seed and play the No. 1 seed Chicago Bulls tightly, losing in five games -- but three losses are by six points or less. Their upward trajectory under Vogel sets the stage for a big turnaround the following season. Vogel compiles an overall record of 167-100 through 3½ seasons, during which he signs two contract extensions.
