I don't know about you, but this explains a lot.

Paris Hilton saga ends with charges dropped by court (AP/Staff reports): A court in South Africa has dropped the marijuana-smoking case against Paris Hilton. The socialite appeared late Friday night in a specially setup World Cup courtroom (for expediting cases during the tournament) after being arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana at a quarterfinal between Brazil and the Netherlands.

"Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana," a publicist for Hilton said in a statement. "However, I can confirm that the incident was a complete misunderstanding, and it was actually another person in the group who did it. The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made."

When told the case had been dropped, Hilton said "Thank you" and left the courtroom. Hilton wrote on Twitter later: "Everything is fine guys. I had nothing to do with it."

Here is the official South African police statement on the case, and what happened: "At approximately 17:30 on Friday 2 July 2010, police took two women into custody at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on charges of being in possession of cannabis. The arrests followed an incident during which police could smell cannabis, and when they approached the two women outside the stadium, a cannabis cigarette was thrown to the floor. The women were then apparently ushered into the stadium by bodyguards. Police seized the evidence and approached the women inside the stadium. The women were taken into custody after a bodyguard handed a second cannabis cigarette over to the police. Prosecutors were consulted and the women were taken into the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court. Charges were withdrawn against Miss Paris Hilton as her co-accused acknowledged being in possession of the cannabis and pleaded guilty. Miss Jennifer Rovero, 31 years of age, of New York, was found guilty on one charge of being in possession of cannabis. She was sentenced to R1000 fine [about $130] or 30 days imprisonment."
