Spain 1, Portugal 0
Spain's David Villa scored his fourth goal of this World Cup, and that was enough to send Spain through to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. Portugal dropped to 1-8-0 all time at the World Cup when conceding the first goal. The lone victory came against North Korea in 1966, which is also the only other time Portugal has recorded an equalizer in a World Cup match.
• Sergio Busquets put together one of the best passing performances in Spain's World Cup history. The midfielder completed 97 of his 102 passes (95.1 percent), the highest percentage of any Spaniard who attempted at least 85 passes in a match since 1966, when the stat was first kept. He also ranks seventh of any player during that same time. Spain's passing accuracy as a team is 88.6 percent at this World Cup, which is the fifth-highest at a single World Cup since the stat was first tracked in '66.
• Portugal's Ronaldo had 34 touches in this match, his lowest total at this year's World Cup and lower than 10 Spanish players. Ronaldo averaged 46.8 touches per match at this year's World Cup, down from the 61.5 per match he averaged in 2006 as Portugal advanced to the semifinals.
• Spain had 60.8 percent of the touches in Tuesday's match, the third time at this World Cup that La Furia Roja controlled at least 60 percent of the touches in a match. Spain became only the second team to control at least 60 percent of the touches in three matches at a single World Cup, joining the Netherlands, which also did it in 1998.
• Eduardo recorded nine saves for Portugal on Tuesday and finished the World Cup with 19. The nine saves were the most by a Portuguese keeper in a single World Cup match. His 4.8 saves per match at this World Cup is the best by a Portuguese keeper since the stat was first tracked in 1966.
