Uruguay 1, Ghana 1 (Uruguay advances 4-2 on PKs)
Uruguay survived a wild finish to its quarterfinal match with Ghana to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 1970. Co-leading scorer Luis Suarez was sent off after an intentional handball on the goal line prevented a game winner from Dominic Adiyiah in added time of the second extra-time period. Asamoah Gyan missed the ensuing penalty, and Uruguay went on to win on penalties.
• Uruguay has averaged 230.6 completed passes per match at this World Cup. That's the lowest average by a team to reach the semifinals since the World Cup went to its current knockout-stage format in 1986. Argentina has the lowest by a team to reach the World Cup final, averaging 289.3 through the semifinals of the 1990 World Cup.
• Ghana's Gyan became the first player to miss two penalties in his World Cup career. He also became the fourth player to attempt four penalties in the World Cup, joining Eusebio (POR), Batistuta (ARG) and Rob Rensenbrink (NED). All three of those players converted each penalty attempt.
• Uruguay once again lost the possession battle in this match with 48 percent of the possession and 45.4 percent of the touches. The discrepancy was even more pronounced in extra time, as Uruguay had only 41.6 percent of the touches. Uruguay has had the lower possession and percentage of touches in each of its World Cup matches this year. In 29 World Cup matches since 1966, Uruguay has had the higher percentage of touches in a match only seven times.
