NEW YORK -- As we noted six weeks ago, Bob Bradley's job was hanging by a thread during the Gold Cup, and as it turned out, he probably needed to beat an excellent Mexican squad in the title game to keep it.
As for Juergen Klinsmann -- the national team's new head coach who replaced the ousted Bradley on Friday and was introduced to the media on Monday -- he's likely to have a long leash.
In his first news conference, Klinsmann made it clear that his first several months on the job, beginning with a friendly against that same Mexico squad next week in Philadelphia, will be as much about gathering intelligence as it will be about gaining results. So although Klinsmann wants to "make a good impression" against El Tri, "we will take our time," he said, and "get to know a lot of different people, different approaches."
