News that Landon Donovan wants to return to the U.S. national team broke at about 11 p.m. ET Wednesday, the way news usually does these days: on Twitter.

The way it went down, though, was anything but conventional. Donovan, 30, the Yanks' all-time top scorer, apparently was the guest speaker at a USC journalism class, where at least one student began live-blogging his comments (read the full timeline here) to the outside world. Soon enough, mainstream soccer reporters were retweeting Donovan's comments, and moments after the Q&A portion of the evening began, the entire American soccer community finally got an answer to the question it's been asking for months.

"Yes, I do have an interest in playing for the [national team] again," Donovan, whose future with the U.S. program had remained in doubt even after it was announced that he would return to the L.A. Galaxy this spring, reportedly told the assembly. "If given the opportunity, I would."

Don't read too much into that last part. Of course Donovan will get the chance to rejoin the team that so desperately missed him in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying loss in Honduras earlier this month. Still, there is probably more to Donovan's choice of words than a player simply making it known that he's not taking a call-up for granted. There are still fences to be mended.
