• Hot List: DaMarcus Beasley's big game

Several key U.S. starters from the disappointing midweek trip to Honduras shook off the World Cup qualifying loss (and the jet lag) and turned in impressive performances for their European clubs over the weekend -- a list that includes Clint Dempsey (who, playing as striker, was everywhere in Tottenham's 2-1 win over Newcastle) and midfielders Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones (who stood out for Roma and Schalke, respectively, even though their teams lost).

But if the defeat in San Pedro Sula reinforced anything, it's that the U.S. still needs all of the depth it can get. That is the reason why today's Hot List is dedicated to five fringe players who, depending on their current club form, could be back in (or still out) of the national team mix when World Cup qualifying resumes next month.

Warming up

DaMarcus Beasley, M, Puebla (Mexico)

Why he's here: With Puebla and San Luis deadlocked 1-1 in the second half, the three-time U.S. World Cup vet entered as a substitute and scored twice to help his Liga MX team earn a 3-1 win on the road.
