Game preview: Boston Celtics vs. Toronto Raptors

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Celtics will travel to play the Toronto Raptors on Friday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN/WatchESPN.

The Raptors have won seven of their last eight home games against the Celtics. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these two this season. Toronto has won two of its past three contests against Boston; over the past two seasons, the Raptors are 5-2 against the Celts.

Interestingly, in all three meetings between the Raptors and the Celtics this season, the team that was winning at halftime went on to lose the game.

Raptors players to watch: Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan

Against the Celtics this season, Lowry has averaged 30 points per game while shooting 56 percent from the field and 52 percent from the 3-point line. Over his past nine games against the Celtics, Lowry has averaged 24.4 PPG and made exactly 50 percent of his 3s.

Over the past three seasons, DeRozan has played eight games against Boston, averaging 27.4 PPG.

Celtics player to watch: Isaiah Thomas

Thomas is averaging 10.7 fourth-quarter points this season, which puts him on track to have the highest average in any quarter over the last 20 seasons. Thomas is averaging 3.6 made free throws per fourth quarter. The next closest in the NBA are DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmy Butler at 2.6. Thomas entered the break averaging 29.9 PPG for the season. That's the highest scoring average by a Celtics player entering the All-Star break in franchise history. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Thomas has led the Celtics in scoring (outright or tied for the most) in 21 straight games, the longest streak in Celtics history and longest for any NBA player this season.

Boston's offense becoming a legitimate force in the league

The Celtics' offense was ranked 27th in the league during Brad Stevens’ first season. But in their fourth year with Stevens at the helm, the Celts are pushing to become a top-five offense, based on several key factors. For one, they are one of four teams making at least 12 3s per game this season. Secondly, Boston ranks second in the NBA in passes per game (327); and finally, they are third in the league on field goals made off catch-and-shoot opportunities (11.1).
