AVON, Ind. -- Running back
Charles Davis didn't starting playing football until seventh grade, but this isn't one of those stories where he was the best player on the field the second he walked out onto the field. In fact, it's far from it."They got the A team and the B team," Davis explained, "and I was like the fourth-stringer on the B team. I never got in."By the end of the season, though, Davis said he was starting and a constant visitor to the end zone. Now as a senior, the two-star speedster is getting looks from a handful of BCS schools, including one from the SEC that has already offered."I went to Ole Miss for a camp and I did pretty good," Davis said. "We talked about an offer before the camp. I went to the camp and showed what I can do. They just wanted to see me at camp before they offered."Davis, who has great speed (according to him, his personal best 40 is a 4.37 at Alabama's camp), said most schools are looking at him as a slot receiver. But at just 5-foot-7 and 162 pounds, college coaches are weary about his durability at the collegiate level.Avon coach Mark Bless said he thinks Davis is best suited at running back."He's got great explosiveness. He plants his foot and shoots upfield," said Bless, who usually runs Davis on stretch plays to get him on the perimeter and then make one cut in hopes he'll be off to the races from there.Bless said he thinks coaches are underestimating Davis' strength, especially in his lower body."He's shown a lot of toughness," Bless said. "In one game we ran a screen on 3rd and 12, he caught it and there were three guys on him. He got 15 yards."Indiana, Memphis, South Florida, Temple and Washington State are the teams that have stood out to Davis. He has some friends at Washington State and family in Memphis. He's especially interested in Indiana, but like those other programs, the Indiana staff wants to see Davis pick his grades up before offering."Right now, they're keeping an eye out for me," said Davis, who visited the Virginia game on Sept. 10. "I just got to focus on my grades right now. That's mostly all it is with them. Once I have a good trimester I'll probably get offered."Davis is waiting to use his official visits once he gets his grades in order, but he will be checking out at least three games in October. He will visit Toledo for its game against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 8; Memphis for its Oct. 15 game against East Carolina; and Cincinnati for its game against South Florida on Oct. 22.
Daniel's stock contineus to riseElijah Daniel's recruitment will be a crapshoot. Nearly every major BCS power -- Alabama, Florida, Ohio State and more -- are expected to be in the hunt for Daniel. The one certainty in Daniel's recruitment is that he is going to be a tough sell for college programs. After having two brothers go through the recruiting process before, he knows some coaches are just going to tell him what he wants to hear if it means getting him closer to signing on the dotted line."All the hype, like how [coaches] hype you up," Daniel says will be one of the major turnoffs in his recruitment. "They are like 'Oh, you're this,' but I already know [whether it is genuine]."So what will Daniel, an ESPNU 150 Watch List member, be looking for when talking and meeting with coaches?"Playing time, strength and conditioning [programs], obviously pro potential and academics. And the people that are there -- if the people are nice."Despite being at least another week away from playing his first game this season, Daniel already has four offers. Indiana, Iowa, Marshall and Purdue have already offered Daniel, who is recovering from a knee injury."It's going to help a lot when he comes back," Bless said. "We switched from an eight-man front to a 3-3. He'll help solidify our run defense."Daniel will miss Friday's game and the plan is for him to play on a limited basis next week. Daniel will have two games to get in football shape before the playoffs start. In the meantime, Daniel will be taking a few more visits. On Saturday, Daniel will travel to Gainesville for the Alabama-Florida game. He also plans to go to the Alabama-LSU game on Nov. 5 and the Miami-Florida State game the following week. He'll also visit Notre Dame on Oct. 22 when it hosts USC.Arkansas, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee and USC are just some of the other major programs heavily recruiting Daniel.Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Georgia have all received visits from Daniel already, mostly for games, though. Daniel has been to Sanford Stadium three times to see Georgia play as his brother used to play for the Bulldogs. The visit to Iowa may have had the biggest impression on Daniel, though not exactly for the reason Hawkeyes fans might hope."I thought it was real cool, but there were a lot of cornfields."
