WEST ALIQUIPPA, Pa. -- Hopewell running back
Rushel Shell is poised to become Western Pennsylvania's all-time leading rusher Friday night, but his coach Dave Vestal said there won't be any long, drawn-out celebration."I don't think they're gonna stop the game for 20 minutes like [Derek] Jeter," joked Vestal. There's a good reason for that: It would be setting a bad precedent. Not for the rest of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League, but for Shell alone. The WPIAL rushing record is one of many records Shell will almost certainly break this season.Shell, after rushing for a mind-blowing 366 yards last week, is just 134 yards from Mike Vernillo of Fort Cherry's WPIAL record of 7,646 career rushing yards. If he gets the record, it will be his 33rd straight game with at least 100 yards rushing, putting him just five shy of Billy Sims' national record of 38 straight games set in the 1970s. Sims, of course, went on to win a Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma. And if Shell finishes with 2,262 yards rushing this season -- he rushed for 2,102 in just the regular season last year -- he'll become the entire state of Pennsylvania's all-time leading rusher and put himself in the discussion for one of the greatest running backs in state history. All of that, though, isn't on Shell's mind. After failing to win a championship the last two years, all the ESPNU 150 member and No. 3 back in the country cares about is getting back to Heinz Field and winning this time."It wasn't ever a goal," Shell says of the WPIAL record. "I'm more worried about winning as a team and winning a championship."That isn't just Shell showcasing political correctness either, which is another skill necessary to make it at the next level."He's more worried about the team and the success of the team," Vestal said. "He's focused on this team being as good as it can be and that the record is awesome. It is a heck of an accomplishment and unbelievable."Vestal and Shell aren't going to make it a point to break the record this week; if it happens, it happens, they say. Shell, however, will have ample opportunities to break it against Mount Lebanon. There is no concern on Vestal's part regarding Shell's stamina. Vestal said it took 42 carries in the state championship game to get Shell just "a little gassed.""We're going to ride our horse," Vestal said. "The more times he gets the ball, the better he gets. And one of those times he's going to take it the distance."
