Two of northeast Ohio's top defensive backs will be on display Friday when Solon hosts Akron Buchtel, and one of those backs will be using that game as a measuring stick for his own ability.Solon junior cornerback
Darian Hicks, one of the top juniors in Ohio, will be watching Buchtel senior safety
Jarrod Wilson very closely. Wilson, who will also line up across Hicks as a receiver, is committed to Michigan.Hicks and the rest of the Solon defense is coming off a shutout of overmatched Worthington Kilbourne last weekend. Hicks wasn't tested but made his presence felt on a few tackles.Buchtel presents a tougher matchup."They have a couple of fast receivers," Hicks said, "but we'll knock them down."Hicks (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) started receiving letters from Football Bowl Subdivision schools this week, hearing from Michigan State, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Wisconsin. The only school Hicks has kept in contact with is Ohio State, calling cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson from time to time. Hicks admits he should probably get in touch with Johnson more than he has.Hicks camped at Ohio State during the summer and received some valuable information from Johnson and the rest of the staff."They were helping me with my form and jamming receivers," Hicks said. "They said how they like my speed and footwork and how I break on the ball fast."Hicks is focused on his high school season, though, and said he will wait until after the season before he begins to look at college more seriously. He did name Ohio State and South Carolina as his favorite teams.
