Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.) three-star defensive back Nate Smith has made a decision and will announce his commitment Sept. 7 at a press conference at his school.Smith, who also plays receiver, will pick one of the five schools that offered him: Michigan State, South Carolina, Temple, Toledo and West Virginia."After I sat down with my parents and family and weighed all my options, I was like I'm ready to make it and get it over with and focus on my season," said Smith, who came to a decision in late July."It was a very hard choice."Smith prefers receiver, but all five schools that recruited him are looking at him as a defensive back. Smith said he plays corner and safety equally well."I can cover like a corner and hit like a safety," he said. The Spartans had three defensive backs named to the 2010 All-Big Ten second team, which Smith definitely noticed. He's also come to respect the Big Ten after living in the Philadelphia area since seventh grade."It's a Big Ten school and I always liked the Big Ten," he said. "I don't think they get enough credit. There are some hard-nosed football teams, and all of them are big."Choosing South Carolina would mean a return to the South for Smith, who grew up in New Orleans and isn't fond of the cold weather and snow."I like (South Carolina) because it's an SEC school and an up-and-coming program," he said. "They have something special."Toledo has told Smith that he's its No. 1 defensive prospect on the team's recruiting board."I was surprised and shocked that I'm their top pick," Smith says. "They have a lot of expectations for me."Accepting Temple's offer would mean he would be able to play in front of friends and family.Smith was monitoring the situation at West Virginia with former coach Bill Stewart and current coach Dana Holgorsen but said it didn't have any impact on his decision.
