Penn State's hot summer continued Wednesday when Cheshire (Conn.) Academy three-star athlete Malik Golden committed to the Nittany Lions, becoming the program's 17th commitment. Golden, who will play cornerback at Penn State, picked the Nittany Lions over Boston College, Connecticut and Iowa. With 17 commitments, the Lions already have more commitments than they had in their 2011 class, although the Nittany Lions didn't have many scholarships to give out last class. The summer could not have gone better for the Lions, especially considering how bad the recruiting outlook appeared this time a year ago when the Lions had just four commits heading into November and many questioned whether coach Joe Paterno would even make it through the 2010 season.Golden is the Lions' 11th commitment since June 25. Among those 11 recruits: ESPNU 150 members Joey O'Connor of Windsor, Colo., and Tommy Schutt of Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard West and four-star prospects Skyler Mornhinweg of Philadelphia Saint Joseph's Prep and Eugene Lewis of Plymouth (Pa.) Wyoming Valley West. The Lions have really made an effort to invade the Northeast, too. Golden is the fourth player from New England to commit to the Lions. Also on board are Jake Kiley from New Hampton Prep (N.H.) and Armani Reeves and Camren Williams from Catholic Memorial in West Roxbury, Mass. The last two players the Nittany Lions pulled from New England were Class of 2010 members Silas Redd and Khairi Fortt, and both will play major roles this upcoming season. Redd is the projected starter and Fortt will see a lot of time as part of the rotation at linebacker.
