Some of the top underclassmen in Chicago got together to work out at the Core 6 Invitational, but no one was as impressive as sophomore Ethan Pocic (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), who is the brother of University of Illinois offensive lineman, Graham Pocic."Graham as you know was heavily recruited," said Lemont coach, Eric Michaelsen. "Graham could've played in any conference in the country. He had a ton of offers. Ethan is better now as a sophomore than Graham was and when it's all said and done, Ethan will be the most sought after prospect in the history of this school."Ethan has it all. He's got size, speed and athletic ability. Usually when you have a sophomore offensive lineman, their coordination isn't where it will be when they are a senior. There's nothing clumsy about Ethan. He gets it. I'm sure it helped having Graham to teach him the ropes but he understands the game and I'm glad I have him for two more years."Pocic said the competitiveness started at an early age in his house."Graham and I would get pretty competitive when it came to video games," said the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder. "It pretty much ended there though. He (Graham) has been more of a mentor when it comes to football. Graham was very successful at Lemont and now at Illinois. That success has made me want to work harder."The best advice my brother has given me when it comes to offensive line play is just to put defenders on their backs and get to the second level. He has also helped me greatly in my pass protection which paid off because I gave up zero sacks this past year."As far as schools are concerned, I'm getting a lot of mail but I'm open right now. I don't necessarily have to follow my brother at Illinois. I may want to do my own thing. I like the Big Ten schools, the southern schools and Oregon out west."Gotta have faithA junior that proved that he is worth the scholarship offers that he has received is Faith Ekakitie (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy). The 6-2, 260-pound defensive tackle looks bigger than his reported size and moved as well as a linebacker or defensive end.Ekakitie is exactly what college recruiters are looking for in a two-gap defensive tackle and why schools such as Northwestern, Iowa, Stanford, Purdue, Wisconsin and Illinois have already offered a scholarship."I feel that I did well at the (Core 6) event but I could've done better," Ekakitie said. "I was actually running around on a bad heel and I feel I could've been quicker and showed even better change-of-direction."I plan on hitting up Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Illinois for some junior days. My latest offers were Purdue and Indiana. I feel that Notre Dame and Duke could be the next schools to offer a scholarship. If I had a choice, I'd like to play linebacker in college but I'm willing to play wherever the coaches want me to play."Others at the Core 6 Invitational that opened eyes were OL Jordan Diamond (Chicago/Simeon) and his teammate, Robert Gregory, linebacker Garret Jensen (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville), linebacker Nick Mangieri (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), offensive lineman Ryan Callen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), defensive end Dean Lowery (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and defensive end/tight end Luke Matthewson (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville).
