One of the top 2012 prospects from the Midwest that made the trip down to Orlando last week for Under-Armour combine was
Bryan Cox Jr. (Avon, Ohio/Avon). The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defensive end could end up playing linebacker. Cox has two scholarship offers and several schools have been in touch."North Carolina and Kent State are my scholarship offers right now," Cox said. "I'm hearing from schools in just about every conference. I'd say that LSU, Michigan State, USC and Ohio State have been in contact the most. I've been to Ohio State, Michigan State and Penn State on unofficial visits."I couldn't begin to name any early favorites. I have a lot of schools in mind. I'm interested in schools in the SEC. I'm interested in USC and I'd camp out there this summer if they didn't go full pads. Going full pads at a camp would make me ineligible for my senior year."Cox is the son of former NFL linebacker Bryan Cox. "The only thing my dad has said is for me to be absolutely sure before I give a school my verbal commitment," Cox said. "My dad said that once I commit, he's not going to let me back out because that lacks integrity."Cox had 38 solo tackles in 2010 and was an all-county selection.
Keep an eye on HeffernOn a recent visit to Carmel (Ind.) High School, head coach
Kevin Wright talked about his top underclassmen. "We didn't have much in the senior class but I'm really excited about some of our younger kids." he said."We finished with a 10-2 record this past year and with the guys we have coming back, we have a chance to make some noise. Keep an eye on Shawn Heffern. He's a 6-foot-6, 210-pound defensive end with a ton of potential. Shawn's father played his college football at Notre Dame."Another defensive lineman that will surely get recruited is Langston Newton. Langston is 6-4 and 240 pounds. His older brother (
Morgan Newton) played here at Carmel and is currently the quarterback at Kentucky. Langston broke the school record in the discus. He's a very good athlete."Ian Sampson (6-2, 215 pounds) is our nose guard. We run a 3-4 defense and teams struggle to single block him. Ian is very strong, plays with leverage and has a motor. I don't know about his size but coaches will look at him for sure and they'll decide which position would be his best at the next level."
Jimmy Herman is a 6-4, 205-pound safety. Jimmy is a track guy that has speed and he's athletic. He could move forward and be a linebacker at the next level. Herman's best attribute is that he plays downhill and he's a hitter."
Eatherley names favoritesKansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst posted a 14-0 record this season and won a state championship. The Hawklets have several FBS level prospects in the Class of 2012 including offensive tackle Christian Eatherley. The 6-6, 250-pounder visited several schools this past fall and is now looking for his first scholarship offer. "I've been to several schools," Eatherley said. "I plan on visiting schools this next few months for junior days. I don't have an offer yet but I'm hoping that changes soon. Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Notre Dame, UCLA, Northwestern, Duke and Stanford are my favorites in no order."Eatherley started every game at left tackle for Rockurst as a sophomore and as a junior.
